Packing into bz2 and the quota
Why compress
The Source engine can download packed files: when a player joins, the client first asks for file.bz2 and only falls back to the original if it's missing. A packed map is noticeably smaller — so it downloads faster and takes less of your quota.
How to pack
- Upload the files over SFTP into
www. - Open the FastDL control panel.
- Click Pack everything into bz2.
Every file inside www is packed with bzip2 in place: de_mymap.bsp becomes de_mymap.bsp.bz2 in the same folder. Already-packed files are left alone.
While packing runs, the panel shows progress. When it finishes, the used-space figure updates automatically.
Originals are deleted. After packing only
.bz2files remain inwww— that's normal and exactly what FastDL needs. But if the sources exist only here, download them first.
Nothing extra goes into the config — sv_downloadurl stays the same, the game asks for .bz2 by itself.
Quota
The panel shows a Used / total bar — how much of the plan's space is used.
| Bar colour | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | Plenty of space |
| Yellow | More than 70% used |
| Red | More than 90% used |
If you're running out of space:
- click Pack everything into bz2 if you haven't yet;
- delete old maps that are no longer in rotation over SFTP;
- move to a bigger plan — order a new service with the quota you need and move the files over.
